Learning how to study effectively can be a great skill for students that can really impact their ability to learn. There are many different ways to study and learn, and it is important to find the tools that are best for you. For example, some people are more visual learners versus auditory learners, and they may want to use visual cues to help them learn. Here are seven effective study tips for students.
1. Get Enough Sleep and Relaxation
Getting adequate sleep helps your brain function at its best. The recommendation is 7-9 hours of sleep per night, and quality sleep. Relaxation during the day is also very helpful in allowing our brain to function well for learning. Massage therapy and meditation are great techniques that cause the relaxation response and can help with sleep.
2. Take Good Notes and Review them
Taking good notes during class or while studying can be a great study tip. You can actually learn through the act of writing itself. The review process is very helpful, as you can start to imprint the information into your memory. This will help solidify the information for future tests as well.
3. Be Organized
Use a planner to stay organized and on top of your study tasks. Dedicate adequate time to reviewing and learning the information. Having a plan in place for completion of tasks is a great way to be sure you are well organized and set up for success with your studying and learning.
4. Use Flashcards
Flash cards are a great resource to test if you can remember the knowledge. You can use these flashcards to self- test or you can have someone help you do them. This technique is helpful for visual learners and can test memorization of information.
5. Participate in Class
Participating helps your brain remember subject matter in real life situations and in your stored memories. Studying by way of simply reading the material can be difficult to take in all knowledge, so staying engaged in the classroom is a great tool for learning the material. This is also a great way to gain clarity and have any questions answered.
6. Find a Designated Study Space
It is best to separate this study space from your bed or couch where you normally relax. It is helpful to have a desk, space on campus, or a library spot because it can help to have your brain focused while studying. This can also eliminate unwanted distractions.
7. Find Others To Study With
Partners, friends or classmates can help you study. The process of teaching someone else the material will help to solidify it for you as well. You can also find ways to motivate each other and keep each other accountable to learn the material. It can be enjoyable to study with others as well, especially if they have similar learning styles as you do.
