Chair massage is a type of massage therapy that is performed on a client while in the seated position. The chair is often a massage therapy portable chair with face and head support that the client can comfortably sit or kneel on. Most people think of massage therapy as being performed with the client lying down on a massage table, aka “table massage.” There are pros to both, and we will discuss the top three reasons to get a chair massage!

1. The person does not want to lay down.

The person may be experiencing pain in certain positions, such as lying prone or supine. The person may also have health conditions that limit the ability to be comfortable lying down, such as breathing issues. Lastly, pregnant women may not be able to lie flat at a certain point during pregnancy. These are all reasons why someone may choose to get a chair massage.

2. Space or time is limited.

Chair massage uses much less space than a regular table massage and can be set up in an area where space is limited. The chair massage can be performed in an airport or other setting where the person is able to stop in for a limited amount of time. It is often performed with the person fully clothed. This can allow for a more concise massage, especially for the neck, shoulders and back (as the person is face down the entire time).

3. Location, location, location!

Chair massage is often performed in a location where it can be set up and taken down easily. This could be at a special event, outdoors, at the beach or at another location that is transient. This can make chair massage much more accessible.

Whatever the reason, chair massage is a great resource and is often just as good (if not better) than a table massage. The massage therapist makes all the difference by adding in exceptional technique!
