The immune system is a term used for our body’s defense system against infection or illness. This is a combination of cells and proteins that protects us from different germs. Here are some healthy ways to strengthen the immune system:

1. Don’t smoke

Smoking can cause our immune system to have to work harder, thus weakening it’s response. Smoking can also affect the lungs and other organs in the body and lead to many disease processes.

2. Eat a healthy diet

A diet that is well-balanced and contains ample fruits and vegetables will keep our entire body system working well – including our immune system.

3. Exercise daily and consistently

Daily exercise of at least 20-30 minutes, including aerobic exercise, can help to strengthen the immune system (as well as our heart and muscular system).

4. Maintain proper hydration

Drinking adequate amount of water will help our immune system function. Half of our body weight in ounces of water is the recommended amount.

5. Get adequate sleep

Sleep is so important – quality and quantity. Seven to nine hours of quality (uninterrupted) sleep is recommended.

6. Practice Proper Hygiene

Take steps to avoid infection, such as washing your hands frequently. Proper hygiene and hand washing will prevent illness and fend off germs that can cause our internal system to work harder than it needs to.

7. Regular massage therapy

Consistent massage therapy can actually help to strengthen our immune system. This can be any type of massage you’d like. Massage also helps the lymphatic system flush out toxins and keep our circulation of blood adequate.

Research has shown that receiving regular massage therapy helps boost our system and flush out toxins. There is also increased blood flow throughout the body. Massage increases the activity of white blood cells that help our body fight diseases and may help with reduction of cortisol, which is a stress hormone that can lead to illness or a weakened internal system.

Massage therapy can help to relax our body and brain, and get us into the “rest and digest” state. This is helpful to reduce stress and boost our body’s natural healing capacity. The effects of massage are very helpful for many reasons, and a healthy immune system is just one of the many.
