Massage therapy can be beneficial at any age, and in particular is very beneficial for the geriatric population. There are many physical as well as emotional benefits that one will receive through massage. As always, it is important to check with your Medical Doctor before beginning any new health related endeavor or treatment, and your massage therapist will screen for safety and to find the right fit as well.

What is Geriatric Massage?

Geriatric massage involves gentle massage techniques and light stretching to ease muscle tension without excessive friction on the skin.

Massage can help to improve circulation, decrease muscle and joint pain, and promote overall wellness. With age, people may tend to have issues with circulation and lymphatic function therefore a great addition. People also may see more muscular or joint-related pain that can be relieved with massage. Regular massage therapy is a great addition to promote overall wellness and help our body to move well and feel good physically.

The Importance of Touch:

Touch is also very important – especially in our elderly years. There can be feelings of loneliness or even depression and anxiety. People can tend to feel isolated or not connected well with others. Massage therapy is a great way to experience the therapeutic benefits of touch, and help combat the other emotions discussed above. The therapeutic relationship between a client and their massage therapist is very valuable.
